Westport Food & Craft Market
Westport Food and Craft Market takes place on Saturdays from March to December in Westport, County Mayo. A selection of fresh local produce, home-made foods and craft are available to the public.
Westport Country Markets
Westport Country Markets Ltd. Opened in the Town Hall in October 1987 following public meetings held in the Teagasc Centre. Teagasc advisors and country market head quarters helped in the set up. The aims of the market are to market members’ fresh quality farm, garden and home produce and traditional crafts, all using native and local materials where possible.
Over the years the market has expanded and is now a thriving business, word of mouth being the best form of advertisement. Produce on offer at the weekly market includes organic vegetables, free range eggs, fresh flowers, baked goods, jams and chutneys. Traditional crafts include woodturning, patchwork, homespun wool, hand woven items, hand knitting, pictures, toys and greeting cards.
All goods supplied by members are produced locally, the vegetables and flowers are freshly harvested just before the market, baked goods are freshly made and are free from all additives and preservatives. Country Markets Ltd. is bound by the health and hygiene regulations of the land, as any other business. The highest standards of hygiene are respected at all times in the preparation of produce.
A tea/coffee shop is open during market opening hours. It is hosted by members of the market. Tea, coffee, sandwiches, savouries, cakes and pastries are served.
The market activities are based on the co-operative principle of self help and mutual help, sharing of skills and knowledge. To this end members must give a commitment to supply their produce throughout the entire year.
At a time when Irish Farmers are coming under increasing pressure, Country Markets can offer a much needed alternative source of income for many farm families. There is no middleman, the producer sells directly to the consumer, customers know where the produce comes from and that they are supporting the local economy. Producers get direct feedback from customers which keep them in touch with needs.
The country markets are held every Thursday from 8.30am – 1pm in the The Boxing Club, James St, Westport.
